George Benna Obituary

George was born to Andrew and Mary Benna in the Kolin farming area near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. At a young age he was capable of handling a team of horses and helping on the farm. At age 16 he built his own sawmill which became very useful on the farm as well. On November 3, 1943 George was united in marriage to Clara Hrabi, at the Roman Catholic Church in Esterhazy. Shortly after that they moved to his own farm along the beautiful Qu’Appelle Valley. In 1954 jobs in British Columbia were known to be more available so he moved with his family to Cache Creek, B.C., where he became a sawyer for many years in the surrounding areas. George also worked at Bethlehem Copper and Lornex mines, being a millwright. He enjoyed his working years greatly until he retired in 1986 at the age of 64. To fill his spare time he had many hobbies in woodworking in his workshop at home, making such projects as wishing wells, chests, trays and jewelry boxes, which found their way into many a friends home as gifts. George was also very active on the Council of Cache Creek, serving for 11 years as Alderman and playing a major role in the establishment of Cache Creek as a Village He leaves to mourn, his loving wife, Clara, of 65 years and five children; Sharon Kelland (Grandchild Jeffrey (Robin) and great grandchildren, Faye and Gwen), Janie Benna (grandchildren, Susan and Stephen), Donna (Ray) Litram, Gary (Wendy) (grandchildren, Chritina, Melissa, Mitchell and Chelsey and great grandchild, Sienna ) and Angela [Dave } Holloway. He is also survived by his two sisters, Anne {Victor} Bartok and Margaret {Lyle} Keeler, sisters in law, Melina Benna and Annie Vass and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Andrew, his grandson, Michael Litram, his three brothers-in-law, Nick Vass, Steve Tayfel and Albert Hrabi and his sister-in-law, Mary Tayfel. George was a good provider and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

A Funeral Mass for George was held on Wednesday July 1st 2009 at 11:00 am in the St. Gerards Catholic Church Ashcroft followed by burial in the Ashcroft Cemetery.
